That Scott McCarthy would work with wine was a given: born into a viticultural family in Mildura (Victoria), Scott grew up on the family vineyard, later moving around Australia’s wine-growing regions following his father’s career as a viticulturist.
He began his own career in the wine industry with Yalumba Wines in South Australia’s Barossa Valley. Starting as a cellar hand, Scott spent 9 years with Yalumba before pursuing international wine-making experience.
This quest saw him working in California’s Napa Valley, then France — in both the Languedoc region and Loire Valley.
Returning to the Southern Hemisphere, Scott spent 3 years in New Zealand’s famed Marlborough region, making wine for substantial contract facility Rapaura Vintners. This premium facility deals with all cool climate varietals, focusing on Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

After the birth of daughter “Cloudy”, Scott and his wife Joanna decided to move back to Australia — before Cloudy was old enough to start misusing vowels — where he was offered the winemaker’s position with a leading contract winery in the Yarra Valley.
The birth of their son “Reef” has seen Joanna and Scott happily established back in Victoria, living in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges, and concentrating all effort into producing world-class wines for Helen’s Hill Estate.
