Made entirely from the MV6 clone, our First Light Reserve Pinot Noir reflects the unique characteristics of Australia’s very own Pinot Noir clone. (The MV6 clone was first propagated in Griffith; "MV" stands for Mother Vine.) The original vines were sourced from cuttings taken from the famed Clos Vougeot vineyard in France’s Burgundy region.
Planted in 1980, the vines are now well into their third decade and require little intervention. Their age naturally yields low volumes, allowing for a pure expression of both varietal character and site. These older vines consistently offer depth and an unforced elegance vintage after vintage.
The 2022 vintage is no exception – elegant yet lacking nothing in concentration. It opens with rolling bramble fruits, subtle earthiness, and a gentle savoury line. Fine-grained tannins frame the palate, with layers of dark strawberry, black cherry, and dried herbs unfolding in each glass.
This wine will reward time in the cellar, but is equally compelling now when paired with dishes like roast duck, mushroom risotto, or grilled lamb with rosemary.
