Helen's Hill 2023 'The Smuggler' SCR Pinot Noir

The Abel clone has long carried a sense of intrigue — a suitcase cutting quietly brought from Burgundy to New Zealand decades ago. Its journey and mystique led us to name our expression of this clone The Smuggler. Known for its intensity, perfume, and dark-fruited depth, it remains one of the most characterful Pinot Noir clones in the world.

In 2023, the Yarra Valley’s cooler, slow-ripening season allowed this expressive clone to show its finer, more elegant side. The wine is lifted and aromatic, shaped by the gentle rhythm of the vintage.

The nose brings dark cherry, wild strawberry, and soft spice. On the palate, it’s elegant but purposeful — red and black berry fruit layered with subtle earthiness and well-integrated oak. The natural acidity from the season provides clarity and length, giving the wine a clean, confident finish.

Ideal with duck, mushroom pasta, truffle dishes, or a relaxed charcuterie board. Enjoy now or cellar for added depth.

Pale garnet in the glass, Smuggler Pinot Noir opens with aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, and rose petal, supported by subtle spice and a whisper of forest floor. The palate is supple and refined, with layers of bright red fruit, fine tannins, and a gentle savoury edge that speaks of the Able Clone’s depth. French oak adds lift and texture, framing a long, graceful finish that leaves both freshness and intrigue in its wake.

Sourced from our Yarra Valley vines planted to the Able Clone, this wine is hand-picked and fermented in small open-top fermenters to preserve fragrance and purity. After fermentation, it matures in French oak puncheons for 18 months, allowing texture and balance to evolve while keeping the fruit’s energy and perfume at the centre. The Able Clone is prized for its naturally small berries, deep colour, and fine, silky tannins — all hallmarks of this distinctive Pinot.

Smuggler Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with dishes that mirror its balance of elegance and character: roast duck, mushroom risotto, chargrilled salmon, or truffle pasta. It’s also the perfect companion for conversation — a wine to share over stories, laughter, and a reminder that sometimes, the best things in life start with a bit of daring.
